Searching for allies in the streets of this imaginary metropolis proved rather difficult. As expected of a dream, the rules were pretty inconsistent. Some people manifested with their masks still on, while others--like Andrea--did not.

Although she was convinced that everyone trapped in the penitentiary of prisms had somehow ended up in this strange realm, finding them was like finding a needle in a haystack. Except the haystack were droves of Megalopolans seemingly going about their daily lives like their civilization had never collapsed.

Eventually, she found a figure lying motionless in an alley like some kind of bum. The figure was hunched over, making them hard to identify at first glance. “Hello…” Andrea approached cautiously. “Do we know each other? Are you in the Dummy Ward, the Weakling Ward, or…”

He basks in the shadow of neon beauty. Within this world, his mind is his own. The body still refuses to comply. Fatigue catches up to a man that tried to do too much.[break][break]
All he can do is close his eyes and pray for rest, true rest. Across the street, suspended in strange green liquid, Hattori floats like a dead science specimen. It rouses anger in him, the single thread of resistance left against his new masters. As wroth as the sight makes him, he is in no shape to do anything about it. Instead, with no other option available, he drips his head and rest.[break][break]
That is how Andrea finds him. Navy’s head is unmasked, but obscured at first all the same. Long, dark hair and a full, now unkempt beard makes him look the part of a vagrant. Her voice rouses him from false rest. Looking up at her, his vacant gray eyes take on a glassy sheen in reflected pink light.[break][break]
“Andrea?” At least here, he can speak in a clear voice. “Arceus…they got you, too?”

“N-Navy?!” The young woman exclaimed in shock as she recognized the scruffy beard and grizzled visage that went with it. To think that not even the higher-ups were safe from the never-rot’s clutches… It was very disconcerting.

“Don’t tell me they got the Elite Four too! Did they also get MATIAS SILPH?” That would only be the second worst thing to happen to Matias that month, if true. How had those wacky retainers even managed to capture Hoenn’s finest?

It is said that honesty is a virtue. Honest hearts make for honest actions. When Andrea’s questions are asked, they are met by a moment of silence. Navy runs a hand through his hair, as if that will conjure up an answer. Sorting through a haze of memories, he does math in his head. Most of the answers he comes up with, he doesn’t think she’ll like. Nothing good will come of being honest.[break][break]
“Twenty people, at least. Gotta be. Our ward is…it’s big. Lots…lots of folk who are Rockets. Didn’t see Matias. Saw his brother. The Silph.”[break][break]
As for the rest?[break][break]
“I…I don’t know, Andrea. I was in the hospital for a week before all this started. A Sootopolis hospital.” His eyes shift away. If they leave this prison one day, and that seems a dicey proposition at best, he’ll be in a bad way. It makes him shift uncomfortably where he sits.[break][break]
“Are Jalapeno and Chomper okay?” When he asks the question, his eyes move to the building across the street, where Hattori floats like some dead thing lost at sea.

"Your ward? Which ward is that?" Andrea asked curiously. She did not remember seeing him or FERNANDO SILPH in the Dummy Ward. In fact, most of the Dummy Ward seemed to be comprised of teenagers, which made the actions of their wardens all the more reprehensible. Not even Team Rocket would subject minors to that kind of torture.

Her fist clenched in anger just thinking about it. Getting even was just as important as getting out. The mention of her two most beloved Pokémon dispelled those violent intrusive thoughts. "Jalapeño is with my parents... at least I think he is. He wasn't in my party before any of this happened."

That was the story she was going with until proven wrong. She was mortified by the possibility that those monsters could lay their filthy hands on her son. "As for Chomper, I saw him in a tube much like that one." She added, pointing at the test tube containing a sleeping Hattori. "What's up with those anyway?"

“Maybe they’re hurt, and this stuff’s helping them heal.” He says. “They don’t look like they’re in any pain.” After he says the words, a peculiar realization dawns concerning. The words taste like truth, as far as he can understand that truth.[break][break]
Before he can dissect his own words, or the immense conflict between what he says and what he thinks, Navy presses on to another point. She’s willing to talk to him, and that’s a start. Most people have simply passed him by.[break][break]
“I’m in the ugly ward, by the by. Freya’s there, too. Recognized her hair. Baki’s there. Don’t know if you know Baki, she’s my kid.” Another passing thought follows the statement. “Think Melody’s in the dumb ward.”

Whether he was speaking the truth or a muddled version of it, Andrea chose to take the sheriff's word for it, because believing that their friends were unharmed was the option that let her sleep at night. A peaceful sleep was vital in order to maintain this dreamlike illusion.

An ephemeral pause followed the reveal that Navy was part of the Ugly Ward--the snakes, as DESIREE BLOOMS called them. Unlike her fellow girlygang member, Andrea held no vitriol for the uglies. It would be unfair to hate someone without knowing the full picture.

"Yeah, I've met Baki. How is she holding up?" Was the PokéManiac's first question. "I'm in Dummy, actually. I share a cell with Johanna Joy. Dunno what Melody's voice sounds like, but I did recognize Ettie, Desiree, and I think Isaac and Eris." She told him what she knew.

Then came the question that was gnawing away at her. "W-when they..." The girl visibly shivered. "When they punished us and the Weakling Ward, they told us that you voted for us to get a worse punishment. That you thought we 'deserved' it. Is that true?"

Her question sends Navy’s hand to his cheek, rubbing where a bruise should be. In the coming days, it will blossom into a wonderful black eye, maybe even swelling it shut. It is one of virtue’s rewards.[break][break]
Feeling the bruise kindles a fire within that reaches his eyes. Hate burns within them, hate he fights down with every new commitment Rocket makes to hitting rock bottom before their competitors. Navy wrestles with the dragon inside, doing just a good enough job to answer.[break][break]
“They made us vote.” He explains. “Dumbs or weaks.” He picks through the memories, using his momentary clarity to paint a picture for himself. “Part of our reward. Wanted to say we don’t have to vote. Instead, I voted for myself. Guards beat the shit out of me.”[break][break]
Me, and oscar clayton, he thinks.[break][break]
“Someone picked the Dumbs. Rest either saw blood or just wanted it over with. Picked them. Fuck…” He feels all the many injuries trying to speak up got him.[break][break]
It makes him mad, it reminds him of being a scared child, never what would happen when his father got home. Sitting up, he says the only thing he can think to say.[break][break]
“Sorry, Andrea. I tried to stop ‘em. I ain’t well. Can’t even stand up by myself, here or in the real world.”

As soon as Navy fell down a spiral of self-loathing, Andrea tried to console him just as her cellmate had done for her. “Hey… It’s okay. You did what you could, and they gave you no choice.” She said, kneeling down and placing a hand on the sheriff’s shoulder.

Knowing that the uglies had been forced to vote eased some of her worries. Yes, people still acted selfishly, but under similar conditions, who’s to say she wouldn’t have done the same thing? Hell brought the worst out of even the best of men, and she was by no means perfect.

The Elite Four member did mention that voting for the downfall of their fellow men had only been part of their so-called reward. “What happened after that?” Asked Andrea. “They said the ward that did the most work would get to go to a good place. Was that a lie too?”

The hand on his shoulder helps. Another human’s presence, a rare hint of affection in this dark place, is like driftwood in troubled waters. His eyes show his gratitude, darting back and forth as if searching for a satisfactory answer.[break][break]
“We…went to this room with a mask. Blue. This alien Megalopolin guy made us put it on. I saw…I saw…I saw…”[break][break]
A fresh wave kicks him off the driftwood, back into the deep waters of despair.[break][break]
“I saw my wife. Saw my kids. Saw where I’m supposed to be. I was back in Galar. Our warden were helping us fight dynamaxed Pokemon. I had my Spectrier back. Everything was…” His voice trails off, some part of him not wanting to admit the last word. Unfortunately, something compels him to speak.[break][break]
“…nice.”

A blue mask? Why would they let them take off their masks only to force them to wear another one? And wearing it made him peer into that other life in Galar he had long bidden goodbye to, except the Loyal Three were there like self-inserts injected into a fanfic.

Her words echo howard slayte’s, a rallying cry planting him in the present. Neither past nor future matter if the world he was born into is destroyed. Some part of him wants to speak up, agree with her, tell her that he’s onboard.[break][break]
“Baki was there when Crystal was born.” Is what he says. “Arceus, I miss them, Andrea.” Instead, he falls into the intrusive, poisoned thoughts planted by the chain. Beaten like a rabid dog in reality, too weak to stand in the dream, that is left to him is to sit and regret.[break][break]
“It felt so real, like it was gonna happen.”[break][break]
